At the end of every year I review the top 12 images I made that year. Even though I always have many long-term projects and plans in development, 2012 surprised me. While I released more images in 2011 than any other year (You can view my Top Images Of 2011 here.), I released far fewer images in 2012, but still enough to produce two exceptional bodies of work/portfolios, which contain several new signature images. I may share many snapshots and sketches on my blog and in social networks, yet I’m careful about the images I actually release as part of my permanent public portfolio. I think it’s important to be selective.
Interestingly, the images produced in 2011 for the two new portfolios (Illumination in Namibia and Suffusion in Iceland) were both exposed in a matter of few short hours. I repeated this type of activity in 2012 in Iceland and Bolivia and look forward to completing those images. I’ve been thinking more and more about what it takes to get into a state of flow and make truly inspiring images (images that are more than smart, well-crafted, or well-seen but also intensely felt) – and how we can tell the difference.
Surprisingly, I didn’t exhibit my new 2012 images this year, during my Annual Open Studio Exhibit. Instead I produced an exhibit/book/seminar entitled Process, which collects my sketches (drawings, color studies, iPhone images, and much more), which are now publicly available for sale for the first time and are in major collections like The Smithsonian. A lot goes into making great images that is often unseen but is felt nonetheless.
I went to some amazing places in 2012 (Iceland, Greenland, Atacama) and produced a lot of material to make new images from, which are in development now, but not yet ready for release.
